A Brief History of Fizzies
The Fizzies drink you know and love gained popularity throughout the 50s and 60s after scientists from the Emerson Drug Company pondered the question, "Wouldn't it be neat if we could drop a drink tablet in water and create an instant soda pop?" The idea was derived from using chemical formulas similar to "Bromo Seltzer", and after a bit of trial and error, the concept became a reality and Fizzies were born.
Fizzies drink tablets were originally offered in cherry, grape, berry, lemon-lime, punch, orange and root beer, and used a combination of fruit flavoring, citric acid, sweetener, and sodium bicarbonate (similar to baking soda) to create a wonderful tablet that instantly dissolved into a fun, sparkling fruit drink. The fun, however, didn't last long. In 1968, the FDA banned a primary ingredient in Fizzies, cyclamate (a substitute of sugar), and the company went out of business.
Then, in the mid-1990s, Fizzies returned by substituting cyclamate for NutriSweet, and they were reintroduced to the market by a new company who purchased the formula. That company soon went out of business, and by 2001, Fizzies drink tablets were off the market again. For five long years, Fizzies were unattainable. Luckily, though, that too didn't last long, and Fizzies drink tablets are now available again for purchase!
