A Brief History on Karo Syrup

Karo Corn Syrup has been around since the early 1900s and was created by the Corn Products Refining Company of New York and Chicago. Before the company introduced Karo Syrup to the market, Americans had to carry their syrup "jug" to the grocery store to be refilled from barrels of the grocer's syrup.

Karo Corn Syrup was heavily promoted throughout the early part of the century and its popularity grew. The second edition of the Karo Cook Book was introduced in the same period and outlined "120 Practical Recipes for the Use of Karo Syrup". In the 1930s, a new use for corn syrup was discovered, which used a mix of sugar, eggs, vanilla, corn syrup, and pecans in a pie shell to produce what would soon become a world-famous favorite: Pecan Pie. Also in the '30s, a new Karo Syrup was developed: Karo Waffle Syrup, which had a distinct maple flavoring and green label to separate it from Karo dark and light corn syrup.

Throughout the 20th century, Karo Syrup continued to remain popular among Americans to be used as toppings for pancakes, waffles and French toast, as well as in recipes for pies, glazes, candies, sauces, ice cream, beverages, and a variety of other dishes to add that extra bit of sweetness. In 1981, a new Karo Cookbook commemorated the eighty-year history of Karo Syrup with print and advertising from different periods throughout the 1900s. Today, with the famous Karo sweetness, this syrup continues to distinguish itself as an American favorite.
