WINTER 2007 NEWSLETTER
Since our inception in 1996, Hometown Favorites has seen many of our “hard to find” products up and disappear. We’ve witnessed the demise of Betty Crocker Coconut Pecan Frosting Mix and Black Cow Suckers. Mourned the passing of Bonkers and Dromedary Date Nut Rolls. Waved good-bye to Big Johns Beans & Fixin’s and Danish Ribbons Red Licorice. And that’s only through the D’s!

But 2006 reached a new low. Wonka Giant Color Changing Sweetarts, a distant cousin to the 3” hockey puck discs we gnawed on in the 70’s, were cut from the line-up a few months ago. Almost as much fun as the huge discs that lasted forever, these hard, tart tinglers were a staple of our ‘70’s Decade boxes and a candy favorite of thousands of our clients.

Our final good-bye of the year was to Spatini, a dry spaghetti mix we’ve carried for ten years. This secret ingredient in many a mom’s “special” homemade spaghetti sauce has been a clandestine pantry staple since Chester was a pup. We’re not about to unmask any of you lifelong users, but we know who you are and we feel your pain.

It’s gone too far. We cannot stand on the sidelines and watch as our childhood favorites continue to be kicked to the curb. We’re mounting a phone-in (in conjunction with an e-mail in) to our favorite manufacturers to voice our objection. We consumers of a certain generation hold the buying power (and the NOT BUYING power) to affect the retail market and there’s no better place to start than at the candy counter.

Beginning with the two recent heartbreaks noted above, we are adding a feature to our website that will give our customers contact information to request (nicely, please!) that manufacturer’s reconsider discontinuing a favorite food product. We will provide as much information as we can and encourage you to have your voice heard. Come on, join us!

In other news …

Tasty additions! Several new “hard to find” favorites are making their way to our shelves; two California favorites - Andersen Soups, a California tradition (especially their Split Pea Soup) since the 1920’s, and Ice Tickles, a frozen icy concoction fondly remembered as an ice cream truck staple. From the Midwest comes one of Chicago’s favorite cookie brands – Salerno. You’ve been hankerin’ for their butter cookies and they’re on their way. Get the milk ready; we’ve got some other “hard to find” cookie favorites coming also .

Lastly, we’re clearing out the remainder of our Christmas and Halloween candies at super sale prices. Click on the link on the home page – quantities are limited – hurry!

That’s for helping us create one fun website!
