Hot & Spicy Candy

Americans are in love with their cinnamon candy! Mentioned prominently in the Bible, Cinnamon has a long and storied history in the spice world – tales of trading posts and disappearing ships, kings and empires. Although Mexico is currently the biggest importer of Cinnamon, we sure do embrace it further north - from Apple Pie to Cinnamon Rolls, we just can’t seem to get enough!

Aside from the sweetness of cinnamon candy, it’s the heat that wakes up our taste buds, keeping us coming back for more. Hard cinnamon candies seem to have been created in the early 1900’s, as several confectioners’ experimented with this baking staple and the process of hard “panned” candies came into being. This method of building candy around a center, by tossing the centers into revolving pans, adding more and more layers of ingredients, was perfectly suited for the creation of cinnamon candy (cinnamon imperials).

Ferrara Pan (from the “panning” process) Candies was one of the first to produce cinnamon candies in sufficient quantities; Red Hots exploded onto the cinnamon candy scene in the 1930’s and cinnamon candies have been a staple ever since.
